After contacting Acronis support, they have told me that there is a bug in OS X 10.11 which prevents you from using AFP for network homes, therefore the problem is with Apple not Acronis. After lots of research/tweaking we have managed to get all or required apps and services working fine on 10.11 apart from using AFP to connect to network homes.ģ. All macs are mainly used to create large Adobe CC files.Ģ. So I assume you use local homes and then just 'map' to network storage using AFP, when 'connect to server'?ġ. I wish "Acronis and Job done" was the answer, but in this case it's not.

I can only assume the whole network home business was setup to reflect the Windows side, as all Windows "My Documents" are redirected to the users' network share. Moving away from network homes would be very hard, as it would involve a complete change in the way our staff/students work (I work in a college). Our users use their network homes to store everything, preferences and 'real files'. If you are using the network home share for saving small files life preferences, specific action files from Adobe apps etc then I wouldn't see an issue, its when you start using SMB on a Windows share for 'real' files that the problems arise

We don't use anything other than AFP apart from people in IT that need limited access to Windows shares for copying an ISO or dropping a file to somewhere and understand the issues/workaroundsĬant help you on the network home shares however, we forbid saving anything locally and users are all smart enough to know IT wont backup anything unless it on the server. So the answer is to use Acronis and job done

The core issue is that whilst Apple fully support SMB they don't fully support SMB on a Windows server because there is a well documented bug in Finder and Windows shares

Unfortunately this is one of those nasty Apple and Windows issues that are the bane of the average Mac Admins life. Microsoft Corporation Windows Server 2008 R2 star 4.7.Is anyone running OS X 10.11 connecting to network homes using SMB? Or has anyone managed to find a workaround to use OS X 10.11 and AFP to connect to network homes? Also the default file sharing protocol in OS X 10.11 is now SMB (SMB3) So my question to you is After all the improvements in SMB on OS X, and the release of SMB3, is AFP still the recommended protocol to use on macs connecting to network storage?Īny opinions or real use cases would be most appreciated. Over the past few years I know that Apple have been trying to improve their use of SMB in their OS, and I know many people now use SMB to connect to network shares, in both small and large deployments. Although when the Mac is configured to use SMB to connect to network homes, you can login using a domain account fine and the network home connects fine.Īfter contacting Acronis support, they have told me that there is a bug in OS X 10.11 which prevents you from using AFP for network homes, therefore the problem is with Apple not Acronis. When OS X 10.11 is configured to use AFP to connect to the network homes, you cannot login using a domain account when trying to login the 'spinning gear' appears and just continues to spin and never logs in (mac hangs). The macs were shipped with OS X 10.11 installed, which is the oldest OS the models support, so we had no choice but to create a new build or update an old build. We have recently purchased a new batch of Macs to deploy this summer, which are all the iMac 21.5" Late 2015 models. All macs are mainly used to create large Adobe CC files. Server side is a Windows Server 2008 R2 VM with Acronis Access Connect installed to present the shares (network homes) as AFP to the macs, but still allow Windows users to use the same shares. Clients side all of the Macs are configured to use AFP to connect to users' Network Homes. We currently have around 150 Apple Macs around our campus (Windows AD domain), all currently running either OS X 10.9 or 10.10.
